After Franco died and democratic constitutional monarchy was installed, a bill of autonomy was set forth for the Canaries and it was actually approved in 1982. In 1983, the first elections for autonomy were held, and were won by the Spanish socialist party, PSOE. The current ruling party is the Canarian Coalition. Today the Canaries enjoy free port status therefore the taxes are very low.
